U makroekonomiji, industrija je grana privrede koja proizvodi usko povezan skup sirovina, dobara ili usluga.[2] Na primjer, može se odnositi na drvnu industriju ili na industriju osiguranja.

Kada se ocjenjuje pojedinačna grupa ili kompanija, njen dominantni izvor prihoda se tipično koristi u industrijskim klasifikacijama kako bi se klasificirala unutar određene industrije.[3] Na primjer, Međunarodna standardna industrijska klasifikacija (ISIC) – korištena direktno ili putem izvedenih klasifikacija za zvaničnu statistiku većine zemalja širom svijeta – klasifikuje "statističke jedinice" prema "ekonomskoj djelatnosti kojom se uglavnom bave". Industrija se tada definira kao "skup statističkih jedinica koje su klasificirane u istu ISIC kategoriju".[4] Međutim, jedno preduzeće ne mora pripadati samo jednoj industriji, kao na primjer kada se veliki biznis (često nazvan konglomerat) diverzificira u različitim industrijama.
